Marriage settlements in Puerto Rico are legal agreements that couples can establish before getting married, or even after they have gotten married, to define the economic regime that will govern their union. These agreements are formalized through a public deed before a notary public and may include clauses regarding asset management, debt management, rights to profits, and other financial and personal aspects.

If a couple does not establish a marriage contract, the legal community property regime automatically applies. This means that all assets acquired and debts incurred during the marriage belong to both spouses.
